This blog post is SO on target regarding mistakes that I've see people making over and over again during my last 20 years in online marketing and web development.

As author Jami Oetting notes, website redesigns involve a lot of moving parts and it can be overwhelming to someone who's never been involved with that kind of project before. (Heck, it can overwhelming to people who HAVE been involved with redesigns!)

We see clients every day who dive headfirst into a redesign and don't really stop to think about all of the details. I guarantee that if you stick to the 8 suggestions offered in Oetting's blog post, you WILL see better results from your redesign project--not just during the chaotic, stressful days of the project itself, but for many months and even years after your site launches. It's all about building a solid foundation with a well-planned site and a carefully crafted marketing strategy that is reflected in every area of your new site.

It's really easy to get lured into the trap of new technologies (such as a new CMS or lots of bells and whistles) and to want to make major changes just for the sake of change. However, I frequently caution clients to carefully consider why they want to redesign their site and if they even need to do that. Sometimes, it's not a matter of "throwing the baby out with the bath water" and they can make great strides by simply improving their existing site so it's better prepared to attract and convert visitors into paying customers.
